Getting ready to make some mothers day art! That's my mama in the corner, I will be painting her portrait as well in honour of mother's day. |
“There is no death, daughter. People die only when we forget them,' my mother explained shortly before she left me. 'If you can remember me, I will be with you always.”
― Isabel Allende, Eva Luna
Isabelle Allende is my favourite author, I identify so much with the characters in her books, her stories are so full of the magic that lies in all the little things in life, death, the spirit world wherever that is. Her stories are filled with spirits of the dead guiding the living through life, since my mom passed I really know what that feels like. Hokey or not it's what happens when you lose someone.
Her book Paula about the illness and death of her own daughter helped me through a very difficult time in my life and I even wrote her to thank her. No amount of therapy could have helped me as much as her words did while I watched life slowly slip away from my mother in the hospital.
I will immortalize my mother with this portrait and hopefully make her live forever.
These are my ancestors on my mothers side going back as far as my great great-grandparents. I found these after my mother passed and have hung them up in my studio. The little girl on the right is my grandmother whom is still alive and very much kicking. I feel like they guide me on my path through life. I'm hoping to do a series of paintings with these photos as inspiration one of these days soon.
Yikes, I didn't intend on this post being so emotional and personal, it took on a life of it's own! Moral of the story is that family really is more important than anything.
